So did a smoke for super bowl sunday and it was the first time I used the smoker when we had some good sustained wind. The smoker is used mostly in my shop with the roll up door open and the 3 vents facing the opened roll up.

What I noticed is that when a gust would come up the temp in the chamber would drop quite a bit and quickly. Something I've never experienced with a stick burner and single smoke stack.

So question is, has anyone else notice this and or has anyone closed up one or more of the smoke vents? Think I may fab up some hoods for the vents that can open and close to control chamber temps and cut down on how much heat and smoke loss they allow.. Any thoughts on that as well?

I think they are a compromise. They allow more even distribution of heat, but like you I have found them susceptible to wind. I positioned my grill so the vents face east for that reason.

@ndfan6464 have you tried using the all weather smoke vents that Rec Tec sells?

I have not. I could see the potential of them reducing the amount of wind affect on the chamber itself.. I'll have to see if I can fab some like it.

Still would think that even with the vent covers the amount of smoke loss is great. Reason why smoke stacks in stick burner usually drop quite a bit inside the chambers. So the smoke and heat are kept in the chamber longer. With the RT it's free access to open cool air..

Guess I'll have to hit the fab table, make some vents/goods and do some testing

I think that imitation is the best form of flattery. The new Weber smoke fire has exactly the same configuration, albeit with built in louvres. Weber is a company with engineering and testing resources to spare, so I’m willing to bet that they tested both the open vents and a stack configuration. Just my two cents.

My grilling area sits in the U that forms my patio area before my pool, so if it’s windy I just move to the sheltered side, I would think some kind of wind blind would do the same thing.
