It's really a good question. The site isn't laid out super intuitively, but I get the impression it's as much a popularity contest as anything. Pictures appear to matter, so I may need to up my photo-game.

If I win, I've offered to fill it up with brisket for our local community, to try to get them involved too.

I'm currently entered into a BBQ contest sponsored by Char Champ. It started out as just having a little fun, but I made the first cut so thought maybe I could ramp it up and make it a blessing for the community as well.
The contest runs through the end of June. Everyone gets one vote per day (you can buy votes too - I can't as a contestant and I'm not asking you to, but that's part of how they're raising funds). So if all the good folks here would make it part of their routine to add a vote each day, I think I could take this thing.
Right now I'm in sixth for my group. You can read about the successive rounds and rules here (https://charchampion.com/rules).Ultimately, only number one gets to advance from the first few rounds. All votes from the first few rounds carry from one round to the next, so I really need to get the votes to take me to number one in this group ASAP.
