It is normal, although personally I have done over a dozen 8 hour plus smokes on the bull and it doesn't appear to go back that much off the lid. Maybe heavier lid on the Bull creates a tighter seal.
Seal it with lava lock. You can get it from Amazon for under 20 bucks. All the major players are designing their smokers with a seal. I did my 1250 after about three cooks and it works great. No more smoke stains and no change in the performance that I can see.
